http://www.ritual.com/splash/

i may have to buy a new computer

from bluesnews

The Ritual Entertainment Website now offers a redirect to this teaser page that seems to be a countdown of some sort, as the page currently sports a ginormous 18. Proceeding through to the main page reveals that the tribe is also launching a playtester program open to those 18 years or older in the Dallas, TX area willing to come in and contribute opinions about their works-in-progress. Finally, on another possibly related note, both http://www.ritual.com/sin2/ and http://www.sin2.com/ now redirect to LegionPharma, a site that looks like a legit drug company, though researching that trademark suggests this is fictitious, so this could be some sort of viral marketing for a still-unannounced Sin sequel. Thanks Frans.

It's SiN 2.

Family Relations: Charles Thomas Blade, father (deceased, Police Officer who died in the line of duty); Sherilyn Palmer Blade, mother (deceased, died in chemical plant fire while saving her staff).

Source: http://www.ritual.com/sin/blade.html

LegionPharma is founded by Sherilyn Palmer under the name of Palmer Pharmaceuticals.

Source: http://www.legionpharma.com/about.php

Wonder what the "14 7" on the splash page means? It could be 14th of July, but the 18 day countdown corresponds to 4th of July, which is a nice launch date.

Notice Ritualistic and LegionPharma likely share the same web host:
www.ritualistic.com (http://www.ritualistic.com) = 69.17.116.118
www.legionpharma.com (http://www.legionpharma.com) = 69.17.116.124

Don "onethumb" (sp) McCaskil - Good to see your post and this one....

From Blues News (As the community over there still debates who's fault the bugs were...and miss the point.....)

I worked on SiN, so I know of what I speak.

Let's get one thing clear: Ritual worked their heart out to make SiN a great, bug-free game.

Activision, as a public company with shareholders to answer to, needed to meet their quarter. They controlled the purse strings, and both QA time and time for us to polish lost out to making their quarter.

Business as usual. The SiN developers weren't to blame, they didn't have a choice. The Activision & Ritual QA teams weren't to blame, they didn't have a chance. If you'd like to lay the blame somewhere, lay it where it belongs: fickle investors and scared execs.

Luckily, Levelord, ParadoX, and Atkins are still at Ritual. They're oozing with talent over there, and they're hungry for a hit. Sin, if reborn, will rock.

Heh, I remember these website hunts back when I used to be part of the Clockcrew (<font color="red">StrawberryClock</font> IS King of the Portal). Hiding text into pictures using light variation, overlapping images, hiding messages in the source code, encrypted sentences, etc. One trick was to turn a picture into a text file, insert a message and then convert it back into a picture. The addition would only mess with a few pixels and wouldn't be really noticeable at a glance.

In either case, this has given me the desire to dig up my dusty box of SiN and run the gauntlet once again. Tomorrow, when i've had some sleep. I used to play MP but never stuck around long enough to get to know the regulars, perhaps I will have a second chance! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

either that, or we are going to have a "prequil" sin game..

Taking a leaf from your point of view... SiN 0.5

Perhaps the website is brought down or bought up by SiNtek?
Perhaps John's mother was killed so SiNtek could move on in?

I hope SiN 2 is slightly more character building than its ancestor. Just played the original again and all I could hear out of Blade was... 'Who's your Daddy!?', 'Make you my bitch!' and 'Damn!'. Good times, good times.

But if this website was not involved with Elexis and SiNTek, why is her name hidden into it?

from what i recall...

SiNTek is the company who purchased blades's moms company.. thorugh a dummy corporation I think?

dammed if i can remember where i picked that up from, but its stuck in my head..

leigontech was just offered a "CASH DEAL" on a merger.. sintek has that kind of cash.

i bet this is all just part of the 'backstory'

Saw the announcement for Sin2, loaded up that dusty old Sin CD, played right through the game and now realised how much I loved that game. Damn can't wait /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I sure hope they have the same voice talent, well actually the whole original team for that matter.

All signs secretly point towards a press or information release related to SiN 2, but what I really want to know at the moment is (that question in the corner of my mind); which publisher could have or has taken the bait?

Because I will bow to the publisher responsible for doing what the rest fear to do and allowing Ritual's and our dreams to come true. From the character renders I saw months back, I be gagging.

Finally! Theres a contiuation of Quake 2, this game had a worse storyline, and gameplay was nothing more than shooting. There was a sequel for Half-Life, wich was worse, and had nothing of what was promised. Each big shooter had its sequel, expect SIN, which was in my oppinion the best of all, cause there was more than just shooting, and it had interresting Charakters. If this isnt just a late april joke from ritual, we can expect a fantastic game! But ritual, plz throw away this first new elexis model, it wasnt as good as the render artwork of elexis on the cover of sin. Just go back to the roots and make this sexy bitch like she was in the first game (big boops, a bit comiclike, original red dress) Maybe you can use the old high res mesh of elexis to extract the normal maps, just make shure she looks like in SIN! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, but that article is using the one I wrote as a basis. I visited Dallas, met with Ritual chappies and wrote an 8-page preview for PC Gamer UK. They subscribe, read the article then sling their own version online. And get the bloody name wrong.

From http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=59893

Ritual Entertainment's long-awaited Sin 2 is to be released episodically over Valve's Steam digital distribution system, with episodes lasting around six hours each to be released "every three to four months" for around $20 (£11.38) an episode.

W.. T.. F..

If there is a DVD/CD version as well, fine. If it's just Steam, then I have an issue with the cost, episodic release and Steam. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If you know the history of Sin you'll know this is a good thing. (IMO).

No publisher pushing for early release. Get it right on the first episodes. Ritual is in control. Then the franchise can be solid.

Secondly, I can pay a little 20$ or so and see how I feel about the game. If I'm lking it..I stay with the franchise. Hell I've waited this long...

"Modified version of Steam" - I'm gonna keep the faith. Rit has always done a good job on engines and modifications. I'll trust them to get it right.

I hope to hear more about Multiplayer....

I'm going to hang around here and answer any questions I'm comfortable answering (so ask away /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif). And to do a spot of Rumour Control:

It's a heavily modified version of Source (the game engine), not Steam (the delivery system).

Tecman
07-04-2005, 09:32 PM
Could you tell us something about the character models? Since this is using Source, did the characters display a variety of believable or comic emotions?

Are the weapons comparable to the ones in SiN, from a design viewpoint?

Did you get to see some SWEET SWEET mutant-type creatures? (yes/no)

Any answer would be appreciated.

What about the most important question?

Will their be "SiN Episodes" Multiplayer? And CTF?

Please?

The MiMiC
07-04-2005, 09:43 PM
SiN Episodes?
Cool, I could go for that.
Using steam for delivery?
Yeah, I guess that's OK too.
Using the Source engine?
Hell no.

I bought HL2 through Steam a day or two after it was released, and while the game runs, I've had graphic glitches ever since I got the thing. The main issue I have is with the lighting in the game, and most specifically the new style flashlight, it DOES NOT WORK. I've updated everything driver updateable on my PC, and it still only illuminates the ground when I face in one specific direction.
This is using a BFG 6800 GT 256MB card with every single official driver release since the card came out, and a few beta ones also, running under Windows XP.
Nvidia even says in their release notes that there's a known lighting issue for HL2 under XP that is not caused by their drivers, but by the Source engine.
And after months of trying to get a response from Valve, and having them repeatedly close my trouble ticket for no reason, and send in several screenshots, files, system info files, etc., they finally point me to the forum thread that I started about the issue, and that another player had to give me the 'fix' in, which is to disable the new flashlight style and set it to the older, HL1 flashlight version, which honestly looks like crap but works wherever I shine it, for the most part.
And Valve's response when I email them back complaining that this isn't really a fix for the problem, but a workaround? After months of trying to get a solution, and months of Steam/Source updates that didn't correct the issue?
Word for word:

We are aware of the issue and are currently working on a solution. However, we do not have an ETA on it yet. Please be sure to check www.steampowered.com (http://www.steampowered.com) for more information as it becomes available.

This was the best they could give me, after months of hastle?
Unless Ritual has fixed this and other issues I've had with the Source engine, I'll be very leary about buying any of the Episodes.
Well, at least I know that their customer support would be good, if their past record is any indication. Much better than the crap support Valve supplies.

My turn...

Okay, I've been very open and vocal on the QoTW topics that have come out (as many other's here on the forum have). In any case, those here on the forum, and on other forums where I've posted over the years related to gaming topics, know my enjoyment, praise, championing (including creating objects for the SiN2UT and SiN Arena projects) of SiN. While I can understand the reasoning behind this decision, based upon the fact that Ritual was unable to get a publisher to back the product, and yet, still wanted to be able to see their baby live (again), I am not necessarily convinced that this Steam distribution method is the best way to go.

First, Steam has not had the best of records within the gaming community in reguards to acceptance/reception of it, and, not having some ease of use (including even to this day some unresolved) issues. While a game like Half-Life 2, arguably one of the most anticipated PC FPS sequals to date was able to essentially weather the storm, I'm not sure if SiN 2, uh...episodes..., has the kind of pull required for gamers to be willing to accept it in this fashion. Also, there are some that will see this as the first step towards pay-to-play method of gaming and they are not 100% sure they are ready for it (at least based upon some other posts I've seen in another forum).

Secondly, while there has been no mention of a boxed version of the game being released, I think the lack of one, even if it's only based upon/includes all of the finished episodes, would be a mistake. There is something special about being able to actually own, hold, look at, open and install a game purchased in a store. Not to mention a manual is a nice touch too. While this sort of ties into the first point, the fact that NOT having to connect to some online server JUST to play a game (ala HL2/Steam) means we (as gamers) don't have to worry about NOT being able to play the game in the future if we want to (considering that authentication servers or whatever may no longer be around by that point). In other words, gamers want to be able to play a game when they want to (at ANY time after puchasing the game) as long as they have the hardware to run it on without the "need" for "permission" to do so. And, if the number of "old school" games being made available on current generation platforms (or updated/new methods) is any indication, people are going to want to play those "classic" games for many years to come.

Third, there are going to be gamers, limited by their online connection (or other reasons), that will be unable of downloading/playing SiN episodes. For those gamers (i.e. potential customers), without an on-the-shelf version of they game, they are not going to be able purchase/play the game. No matter how great the game may be, there are going to be gamers that would have purchased the game that are going to be unable to do so. Some people just don't have the ability to obtain high speed online connections. Yes, many of those very Wal-Mart type shoppers that DO like to play games, but don't have the best of everything. The money they spend on game purchases often adds up to more than all of the hardcore community game purchases combined. If this wasn't true, then why the H3LL did Deer Hunter become a hit top selling title? Simply put, without a copy of SiN episodes on the shelf, sales will be lost one way or another.

While I know the Rit guys have their own take on things, I feel that sometimes and outside perspective, especially one that is contrary to the consensus, can (at the least) offer something to consider. As a fan of SiN, and a BIG proponent for proper recognition for the game's place in gaming history (due to it's innovative features and fun gameplay), I could simply be behind any choice being made. On the other hand, I'm an objective person and try to do my best to look at more than just one side of a situation. In other forums, I've been flamed, on more than one occasion, for stating contrary opinions. It wasn't that I was simply trying to go against the norm, but, trying to point out things that those with a limited view (for whatever the reason) may not have considered. Sometimes I've been right. Sometimes I've been wrong. In either case, the things I tried to bring up were simply to try and bring light to things that may not have been fully addressed/considered.

I know we don't have 100% of the information at this point. But, we can only form opinions based upon the info we have availabe to us. As for SiN episodes, I can't say that I'm 100% happy about the idea of a Steam only distribution method. While I can understand the reasoning behind the decision, part of me feels this will lead to fewer possible sales than if the game was developed on the side and then a publisher found for the product to be put onto store shelves.

On a positive side, one thing to keep in mind is that HL2 is supposed to be being developed to run on the XBOX, like DooM 3. If this is true, then it's possible that there could be an XBOX (or possibly XBOX 360) version of SiN episodes. So, that would mean that while the PC version would perhaps only be available thru Steam, there could still be an on-the-shelf version available. I guess it may depend on how well the PC Steam version does, who knows? In any case, I still think there should be a copy of SiN episodes available on-the-shelf at some time (even if in the future after all online/Steam episodes have been released).

*****

Now from a fully personal perspective, I REALLY wish this Steam thing for SiN wasn't the case. I'm not a fan of Steam, and can't see this really helping SiN in the long run (beyond being able to see SiN again). As much as I hate to say it, unless there is going to be a boxed version of SiN episodes on store shelves, I will not be purchasing/playing the game. I did not purchase HL2 because, and ONLY because, of the Steam required activation (need to download the rest of the game) method. I know that may seem short sided by some (as a gamer). However, I refuse to purchase a piece of software on the store shelves, just like I would any other product, that I cannot use without "permission" (whatever you want to call it). Activation, if required, should be a ONE TIME thing that can be saved/stored and used at ANY other time in the future as long as I own the software.

Sorry, as much as I was looking forward to SiN'n again, I am unwilling, even for SiN, to accept a Steam distribution method. While some may see it as simply a "different method of distribution" for a game, there is more to it than JUST that. I want to be able to OWN the game, including the disc, manual, box, etc., as well as have access to install and play it ANY time in the future, and, without having to ask for "permission". With a Steam only distribution method, that is not going to be the case. :{

I honestly hope this works well enough for Ritual and SiN to be able to get a on-the-shelf version produced that will entice more people to pick the game up. Perhaps then, considering what the Steam activation method is, I will be able to SiN again...

I don’t see why the game can’t be available on the shelf - in a limited manner - and be distributed over the internet/steam.

I don’t think it would too incredibly difficult to burn a copy of the newest episode, put it in a jewel case, shrink wrap it, and send it off. 5 extra dollars would easily cover the costs of the packaging, and $25 is still a solid price for 6 hours of game play.

Heck, even do like the console games and put it in those DVD style cases with a small manual/story outlining the current episode.

If that was the case I would pay a good $5-10 extra to have a row of “SiN Episodes” lined up on my shelf.

Personally I’m excited about the possibilities that this form of distribution presents that you can't have with standard out of the box games.

Same here actually - I didn't like Half-Life enough to have to go through the hassle I heard was required to play the sequel.

I'm hoping this will be different.

I just read a post from the BluesNews thread http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&amp;threadid=58262 that mentioned the same thing. I've read thru all the posts and found some interesting take on this topic. Hopefully people involved with this will read thru all the posts and take it into consideration as well.

PS: Seeing as I regularly read the BluesNews news items, and related posts, I happened to notice something about the recent SiN 2 news items.

The first SiN 2/LegionPharma announcement news item got 58 posts.
The second SiN 2/LegionPharma news item got about 20 posts.
The third SiN 2/LegionPharma news item got about 20 posts also.
Today's SiN 2 news item has 112 posts and still counting.

Why has there been more comments/posts/controversy/etc. about Steam as a distribution method than about the game itself?

I'm going to step out of line for a minute and praise this decision. I can't help but feel that the most important aspect of such a remarkable decision is actually in the interest of both the gamer, AND the publisher. Most of people's frustrations are to do with the distribution service, and their distaste for steam.

In any case, lets focus on the best phrase surrounding Sin Episodes right now: "creative freedom." For all of you sinners that only play deathmatch right now, i think you've forgotten just how different the first Sin was in its content. It was mature in every aspect, from Levelord's personal one of a kind touches (a la Elexis' mansion), right to the very nature of the violence and gore.

Ritual has a goldmine with the Sin universe, and are finally able to express it in its entirety - no holds bared (Just imagine Levelord "uncut"). And to top it off, they will be able to truely complete an episode to completeness, no bugs, no glitches, only fun.

Ritual is going to have a hayday, and we're all going to join in on results.

I think this is a good decision too. I don't see how they can lose here. We always wanted the SiN that never was because of the publishers, now we can have it with a sweet graphics engine that makes the old one look like sunday comics.

Also... look @ the number of people online with Steam.

http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html

And think of the install base of Steam. I think this is going to be a winner. I hope so anyway.

Daikatana wasn't THAT bad, honestly. It was just lynched after not delivering what it promised. Plus the first bit with the TECHFROGS was annoying, but got a bit better later. I dunno, I just got annoyed by it pretty fast.

Some more questions regarding Sin:Episodes:
Did you get to see any sweet sweet mutant creatures?
Does the game feature drivable vehicles?
What was the most remarkable thing about S:E in your opinion?
What about interactivity? Controllable computers and stuff like that?

================================================== ========
Additional Requirements:

Strong proficiency in experimental mathematics and quantum cryptography as well as a strong understanding of DNA sequencing. Any candidate that cannot successfully resolve the following problem will not even be considered:

5(71 -u) + 82 + 66 _ 15 (85) + 1 * (105 - b + 8) + (81 - L) = ???
================================================== ========

Maybe the numbers on the spash-page mean it's part of a DNA code:

147 = ADG

Or it could just as easily be a quotation from the Bible, "Romans Chapter 14, Verse 7":

For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

There is also the matter of the letters located on one of the news pages, which I believe is our best bet. At first, you think it's an anagram of sorts... but if you check the "Source" code (no pun intended), you find there are a number of references to pages in some kind of manual:

A = P1-49
B = P1-345
C = P5-23
D = P9-3
E = P10-27
F = P1-172
G = P4-4
H = P3-71
I = P2-75
J = P1-406
K = P1-204
L = P1-250
M = P10-12
N = P1-22
O = P4-17
P = P3-19
Q = P10-79
R = P2-9
S = P5-21
T = P2-27
U = P4-31
V = P7-3
W = P2-126
X = 14-7 (the final sequence representing another key in the alphabet)

Stop me here if I'm getting people confused.

Now let's assume for the moment that the LegionPharma site is working the way the HL2 site did prior to the game's release: a section dedicated to giving fans clues to a Cipher they must answer in order to know the truth. Let's also assume that the number shown on Ritual's splash page will either change to another sequence, or the last two sequences are already on the site waiting to be found (it's also possible the answer to the question on the careers page represents another sequence).

If each of these "keys" responds to a page and word in SiN's manual, and the sequence of how they've been placed on LegionPharma's page means a specific order... ;)

Wow, it seems I'm a late bloomer for news on SiN2 I can hardly take it all in. SiN episodes for $20 every 3-4 months, I guess I am game for that, as long as they are good of course. This whole viral campaign has really got me hooked to the SiN phenomenom once again, it is really good to see some ol' Sinners, still into the game.

Back again.

Anyway, I did see a tasty tasty mutant. Multiplayer, I was told not with episode 1 but it's definitely in the works.

I'm amazed by the episodic sotrytelling they've got planned, and the fact that Ritual have a firm graps of what the want to do with it. It's very ambitious.

And the interactivity was one of the things that brought people to SiN, so they're definitely adding lots of that.

We can’t tell you how excited we are to see you guys jazzed about SiN Episodes: Emergence, seeing the community jumping really keeps us devs motivated. I’ve been reading the posts here, and trust me, we haven’t forgotten about multiplayer. It’s a very high priority for us.

Episodic content gives us the chance to introduce new gameplay elements to the SiN Universe and respond quickly to player feedback. Most importantly, it will enable us to give the community the multiplayer experience they really want. With the power given to us by the Source Engine and the freedom offered by self-publishing, we don't want to dump standard vanilla multiplayer on to the community. The SiN franchise is key for Ritual, and we will not put out something subpar. One important step for us is to give you, the player, a voice in this process. To do this, in the near future you will find a comprehensive multiplayer survey on SinEpisodes.com that will help us shape the game into a multiplayer experience worthy of the SiN name.

SiN E: Emergence will be a phenomenal single player experience, but we know how important multiplayer is to the community and the franchise. We don’t want our fans to have to “settle,” we want them blown away.

I cannot agree more. If this is the direction that PC titles are going then I will be playing less and less PC games. I did not buy HL2 because of Steam and certainly do not agree with the fact that I need steam running to play an OFF-LINE SP GAME. Sure people say you only need steam once in order to start the game, but why? I paid for the product, I want to play it offline when I want, steam does not give the gamer/end user any choices except one ... if you don't like it, don't buy the game and that is what Im doing.

I wish all the staff at Ritual good luck with the production of SIN and hope it works out for you.

I feel sad that the Ritual website has finally been taken down.
I know the company was gone anyway but seeing their website go
away for good is sad.

It is somewhere a good thing that its down. Perhaps the n00bs that come here wanting to "post" about Episode 2 will now realize that it will never be released . . .

Time to pull the plug for Ritualistic.com then, since almost no-one hardly comes here anymore . . .
