Strange crosshair problem
I have been playing SiN Episodes since it was released on Steam with no problems. Have never experienced any of the lockups or stuttering issues, but lately the crosshairs have disappeared and are replaced by the letters A, B or C, depending on which weapon is selected. When you look at a door or other item, it super-imposes a D or an E over that. It doesn't seem to affect the gameplay in any way other than it's a little harder to aim correctly. It does it in Arena Mode and Story mode, whether is a loaded game or newly started game.

I am using a GeForce 6600 with Forceware 91.31 drivers
800 x 600 resolution with all advanced video settings set to the highest settings. Changing those doesn't affect the crosshairs. It also doesn't affect anything whether the "Quick Info" checkbox is selected or not.

I have defragged and verified the game cache and it reports no problems. I am not entirely certain, but I believe it was OK after the update that added Arena Mode. I think it occurred after the update that added the new maps to Arena Mode.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Strange crosshair problem
Downloading the file and unzipping it to your "sin episodes emergence" folder should do it: http://shyxormz.sh.funpic.de/ftp/SE1Crosshair.zip

Re: Strange crosshair problem
Well this may fix your problem but it shouldn't need a 3rd party to download from, thanks.

Re: Strange crosshair problem
That actually worked, believe it or not. I guess I should've dug around a little deeper. I had no idea that the crosshairs would be a font file. The one provided in the zipped file is a valid truetype font, where my original one was corrupted somehow and is not recognized as a valid truetype font file. Comparing them with a hex editor reveals copyright information in the replacement, where my original is just garbage.

Looks like the only fix other than this would've been to reinstall the game, but if I would have had to download 1gb+ of stuff to replace a 90k file, I would have been furious when I figured it out.

Thanks a lot!

Re: Strange crosshair problem
This usually means a corrupted GCF. The nice thing is that if only one part of the GCF is corrupted, Steam only has to download the parts that it detects are corrupted.

Some people report more success validating their cache files via a link rather than through the UI.

Use the appropriate link to see if it fixes your problems. Just make sure not to do anything while it validates.

Rest of World

Re: Strange crosshair problem
@ sarkie

I only used the original files from the game.

Re: Strange crosshair problem
But you are 3rd party, the whole part of Steam is the fact we shouldn't need "quick fixes", and I don't think you are allowed to link to it, just think if a pirate has this problem. Thank you for the fix just thats why I said it.
