Just bought it but cant play it!

(i've already contacted steam support, i'm just letting off some.. er, steam)

I installed Sin Episodes and after it finished installing, it closed the installation and Steam started. When steam started it just sat there for a good 10 minutes not doing anything.

Now there is nothing wrong with my machine, i've played right through halflife2 and had some issues with steam then too, so i know its just a typical steam issue.

So i closed steam down and restarted it, but only Sin1 and Sin1:Multiplayer were in 'my games'. I tried restarting several times but had no luck, so i did a reinstall of Sin Episodes.

After the install finished this time, steam started properly and the Activate Product prompt came up (it didnt last time), so i entered my number found on the 'quick reference card' in the dvd case, but steam sid it was already activated to another account.

Now how the F*** is that possible? I never tried to activate it during the first install, and this game was bought no less then 2 hours prior at a local games shope, brand new!

So now i sit here twiddling my thumbs, $44 out of pocket, with nothing to do while i wait for the F***ers at steam to email me telling me what the news is. Most likely that i'm shit out of luck and now left with a f***ing dud game.

I hope someone from Ritual reads this and rings the turds at steam and tells them to hurry tfu.

I really hope steam shuts down, its ruining games for the honest people.

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

Try deleting you .blob file (that works for everything)

$44? I hope thats not US.

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

$44 bucks..............When did the game Price jump from $19 to $44 xD!!

s13n1 07-24-2006 02:26 AM

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

Thats $44 Australian.

Deleting the .blob file did nothing, I'm assuming you were refering to the client registry .blob file, not the app update stats .blob file? I only tried deleting the Client one.

Anyway they still havn't emailed me back yet, the women from the games store said she has alot of trouble with faulty activation codes and steam in general. Apparently Blizzard products are troublsome too.

Anyway i'm pissed off and cant wait to play it, but i'm stuck having to look at screens and watchin the trailer.

I'm considering getting HL2: Episode1 as Episode2 looks great, and has Portal and TF2 included, but the problems with steam have really turned me off it.

Anyone else have trouble with steam?

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

there is a very good article about copyright protection here

http://www.virtual-hideout.net/artic...on/index.shtml

http://virtual-hideout.net/articles/...t2/index.shtml

it states out that copyright protection actually punishes the people who buy the games. If you had downloaded pirated copy you would be fine. And EVERY protection up to know except for MMO games have fallen. What is more the people who crack games do it for fun and actually bought them so making copyright protection harder just gives them more fun and the people who buy games more trouble.

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

Yeah its well known that people will try to break copy protection to be rebelious or to be the first to do it. It becomes a challenge for them to break what is considered unbreakable. Its sad to think that in the not too distant future, delivery systems like steam will be an industry standard for games.

Even further down the track, when internet speeds are super fast, we can probably expect games to be loaded into memory on the fly froma main server. This would prevent people from having the game content and being able to breach copyright by editing it or pirating it.

But we know the rebelious/ smart ones will find a way to dump the data thats loaded into memory somwhere and bypass that too.

I'm all for copy protection, but when it stuffs up, its the customers that suffer.

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

I believe the days of the Internet piracy will be over in 5-10 years. It is not necessary even to load data into memory. there can be remote computation of some part of the code like Web Service, RMI, Remoting or something. That is the only way to prevent people from cracking a software... not giving it to them. So the smart guys will not be able to dump staff from memory because it won't be in the memory at all. However untill then the companies better stop making stupid copyright protections to annoy customers.
Except if they are targeting the crackers community as customers...

If there was a problem with the installation then you can probably bring it back to the store. I work at EB Games and we would take it back and give you another one. Then we send the messed up one back to the publisher.

Did you activate the CD key with Steam that was in the package?

I feel for you my friend, to keep someone playing SinEps is cruel.

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

The DVD auto played, i simply installed from the menu.

If there was a special version of steam on the DVD that i was supposed to install, i knew nothing about it. Steam updates itself though right?

Anyway there is still nothing done to fix this problem, so i've posted this problem on the steam boards too. Dont mean to make a a big deal about it.. but hey, it is a big deal.

The game does look good though, i hope can play it soon.

I'm suprised my GF didnt take the game back when she seen the pic of Elexis on the back cover.. :p

If you go to the Games menu in Steam and select "Activate a product over Steam," it will bring up a wizard that will ask you for your CD key.

Enter the CD key that came with your copy.

If it still does not work, let me know and I'll contact Valve on your behalf.

What is the exact error message that you receive when you try to activate usin the enclosed CD key?

s13n1 07-25-2006 09:56 AM

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

After entering the key, it says:

"The product code you've entered has already been
activated by an existing Steam account, and is therefore
invalid. Your subscription to SiN Episodes Emergence has not
been completed.

See the Steam support site for more information."

Before this message pops up, i receive an email that reads:

"Dear Steam user (account name: *********),

This is an automated message generated by Steam account administration.

Steam has detected that your copy of SiN Episodes Emergence has already been
registered to another Steam user. Your product's CD-Key (the number printed on
the CD case which you were asked to type in after installing the game) matches
one already in our database.

The CD-Key you entered is: *****-*****-*****-*****-*****

You will not be able to play SiN Episodes Emergence unless you provide an
unclaimed CD-Key. To provide an unclaimed CD-Key, you will need a copy of SiN
Episodes Emergence which has not already been registered on Steam. Double-click
on the name of the game in Steam's "Games" window and then follow the given
instructions.

Okay, while everyone is busy on their soap boxes allow me to help the poster.

Return your copy to where you purchased it from for an exchange. They likely sold you a bad copy.

Sarkie 07-25-2006 10:45 AM

Re: Just bought it but cant play it!

Somone probably returned a copy after activating it.

It's a hot topic...and one I find endlessly entertaining because the reasons are so simple.

Copy protection may not be effective or wholly necessary, but it keeps honest people honest, much like cameras at a place of business (which are likewise intrusive and rarely effective.)

Steam is the least painful digital delivery system I've used. :)

Anyway, yeah, it is definately off topic so I'm done now.

I've sent an E-mail off to my counterparts at Valve. We'll see what happens.
