Requesting feedback on Arena Mode map

"arena_excavation.bsp" or "The Frost Excavation"
http://www.filefactory.com/file/842935/
(I'll be uploading it to my own webspace later)

The level is set in a small section of an office-ish sort of building. It's supposed to be buried underground, so there're walls of dirt blocking off the exits and the areas outside the windows. To make the dirt more... dirt-like, I used the displacement tool, so it looks somewhat better than just a flat block with a dirt texture slapped on it.

There are spawn points, starting weapons, and AI nodes for the enemies, so it plays okay. The fact that the grunts have no hesitation about using grenades in such close quarters is rather vexing, but it's more than tolerable. Note that there is a "secret" weapons cache that can be found by smashing the wall across from the two soda machines a couple times. You can tell which section of wall it is because the texture is slightly misaligned.

One final note: Almost everything in the map save for the walls, dirt, and windows is either damageable or a physics object, EXCEPT for much of the contents of the cafeteria-esque room.

EDIT: The link above now points to a version with better AI nodes. Improved layout and lighting will come later today.

FURTHER EDIT-OSITY: I've completely redone the lighting, added large holes in the walls that provide much better connectivity (once you smash away the wooden bits with one melee hit), removed some furniture for easier movement, and redone the AI. I think it's actually a decent map now, but I'll leave that judgment to you.

Re: Requesting feedback on Arena Mode map

It's hard to give criticism without sounding like an ass so just remember that everything I say is just my opinion or preference. Take it with as many grains of salt as you wish.

Bad stuff:
1) I would like to see more paths/routes through the map. The map feels very linear walking back and forth from room to room.

2) It is very flat. Some elevation changes would be good.

3) All the furniture makes it tough to run around. It is easy to get stuck on it.

4) The lighting is pretty flat. I would like to see some shadows. Maybe use spotlights instead of omni/point lights.

5) The source engine can push some polys. Add some trim to the walls and grunge decals.

Good stuff:
1) I like the concept of an underground facility.

2) I like that you mixed the organic rock(displacement) with the cement walls. Maybe play it up a little more and add a cave at the end of the hall accessed through a busted cement wall?

Suggestion: Provide other ways to enter and exit the rooms. I would like to be able to pass through the spaces instead of entering the room and then have to turn around and leave through the same way I came. Let the player run circle paths instead of running him/her into dead ends.

The layout is taken from an actual building I've been to before, but I have some ideas that would fix the lack of vertical movement, the linear... the linear-ness, I guess, and play up the organic stuff. I'm going to start up Hammer and give 'em a go.

Oh, and thank you for the very constructive response.

watch the spawning. I saw a Chaingunner Spawn 3" away from me, Rather Disturbing. I felt the same way as a previous poster, poor interconectivity, otherwise looks good.

I liked it the whole lay out was cool.

But things I would change myself are...

Add an enemy finder so that they look for you,
If you do make sure you add ground nodes,

Make it so the enemies do not spawn in the players view.

It also seems to me you didn’t add lighting because the whole map lighting seemed to be the same,
So add some lighting.

If you changed them few things I would find the map awesome.

The map is actually lit, it's just boringly WELL-lit (in the sense of quantity, not quality). I'm gonna mess around and see what I can do about improving the connectivity and whatnot. I did add ground nodes, but I don't know what an "enemy finder" is, so I'm going to head over to the editing wiki, as well.

Thanks all for trying the map and giving feedback beyond "omg your map sux". I've never posted or even made a map before, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the forumgoers here.

EDIT: I've improved (read: added more of) the AI nodes, so the baddies will actually follow you into the hallway and stuff. I'm gonna edit the original post with an updated link, then I'm gonna set to work on improving the layout.

Okay ive just tried this map and I'd agree with some of the older posts. You should be in a bit bigger with various paths leading into different areas. The thing with this map is more like a corridor with places for the badguys to jump out of.

The AI isnt that good either :S
Try Using Ai_Relationship and Npc_Enemyfinder so as soon as the badguys spawn they rush out to you.
:)

I've made many changes to make the gameplay better. It's like a different map, now. The link in the first post points to the updated version, which has been renamed to "arena_excavation".

I found it a little Dark, and I got pinned down in one room.

Great work thus far!
