Anyone want to help me with an idea for a map?

Or more specifically, a single room. I have been messing around with the SDK since it was released, but I have zero creativity in making something from scratch. I only know how to emulate and copy others (hence, I started recreating scenes from movies, etc). Once I have something started, I tend to be able to add my own flair and expand, but until then, I'm lost.

So go ahead and post any ideas you want to share with me for a map. Preferably something small. Don't say "Recreate the entire first level of Deus Ex LOLz!!!1one." And yes I had already thought of that. Haha.

I'm moving into an apartment this weekend (after living with my parents for the last 20 years) so I want to start occupying my time by working on Level Design a bit.

You may also use this thread to post any ideas that you want to share with others if you feel like it.

I have 2-3 vmf files I will never work on again probably but got kinda far in the brush work and texturing, would you like to see those?

Sure, perhaps it will give me some inspiration.

File #82 on this page is something I created to help boost mappers with single player Source maps, can easily be ported over to SiN:E with little effort and it's got a big fat 3D skybox to play with:

I have the same problem, but lately I've been making a lab from blueprints I found online and for the same lab I found video clips of each and every single room. I'm trying to recreate it from the blueprints and video clips.

Yep, no creativity there... and it's kinda boring, because I'm just remaking what I see.

Yeah, that pretty much describes me.

You can always recreate your bedroom or living room. Maybe make it a rat map?

Alright, making a rat map of my living room does sound interesting. I'll give it a try.

I can get images of my tafe lobby i go back there in 2 weeks or i could try draw a render of what it looks like and scan it in to my pc.

It makes for some good action if done with the right tweaking to certain places.

Only thing is its 2 story building i wanna try create it and my mapping skills suck balls so ill throw it out to some1 who might like the idea and ill let them have at it.

I'm taking up Meat's idea to recreate my house (or rather, my uncle's house) as a "rats" map. Time will tell...

Finding the right thing to start with is probably the biggest hurdle to overcome in mapping. When I was still into mapping, it took me weeks to figure out WHAT I wanted to build. And then it took me days to figure out what made a level realistic and funny :D

I guess the problem with mapping these days is that the complex, realistic nature of current engines means you need to put in extreme effort to make your map look convincing, or otherwise it will look like a simple blocky Quake II world. Thinking of all these details you need to put in can be hard. But the guys who do it right can achieve terrific results with the tools we have today.

I'm still thinking about getting the SDK, remembering all my mapping skills from ages ago, and get to work on a single-player map. I'm just afraid I won't be creative enough to even start!

I think a good way to start a DM style map is to start by just drawing out the flow / paths that you think would be a fun place to run and jump around in. Usually after sketching for a little while an image will pop into my head about a real world space that might make sense for the map.

Something else to consider is that the map doesn't have to "make sense". I will gladly give up realism for a fun map. Shoot, you could make an all gray Lego block space map with some deranged smiley face for a sun orbiting around the play area and if the gameplay and flow are solid I'll play it.

If you have never heard of a geocomp before its worth checking out if you are thinking of mapping:

http://nunuk.planetquake.gamespy.com...llengemaps.htm

These are just a few examples and most of these maps use no more than 5 or 6 textures but they are cool to run around and frag in.

Re: Anyone want to help me with an idea for a map?

So I downloaded the SDK today and checked out Hammer; first time in a while that I looked at this editor, but it still feels familiar. But one problem I have with mapping, as it seems to be normal these days, is that you don't shape your map from geometry only, but you are forced to use high-detail models (props or static meshes) to get the detail you want in this state-of-the-art top-of-the-line graphics engine. In the Quake days almost everything was made of map geometry, that's why you could open drawers/lockers and practically anything was possible if you could handle the mapping tools. If I now want to make a map for Emergence that's not set in any of its original environments, I won't be able to make it high-detailed with all the prop objects the game's maps include, because they are of no use to me if I'm making a totally different map. I'd have to model my own props to get my map detailed enough, but I don't have the software or any clue about modelling. It's a little sad that level designers seemingly must be modellers at the same time to make great maps with today's technology.

Of course this keeps me from actually starting a single player map...
