Steam Error Message on Startup

I don't know if you guys answer this sort of thing, but my Steam platform seems to be not working. It loads the 'updating platform' screen, then dies and spits out an error message, stating the following:

Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e8c8) failed with error 200: Receive Failure, WinSock Error 10053 "Software caused connection abort*

Either way, this is really annoying since I want to play SiN, and haven't been playing all week since I'm busy.

Do you have a firewall or another kind of program that could block the connection?

Or... (this is a long shot) but perhaps VX2 spyware? I heard of it kicking you from Punkbuster servers and stuff so it could be possible something like this is causing troubles with Steam. Have you tried scanning with ad-aware (+ VX2 plugin) and/or spybot?

I haven't tried that yet, no. I have a firewall, but it's configured to allow access to that port, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm running Avast! Antivirus, but I should probably load on some anti-spyware program too. What would you suggest?

Edit: I used Spybot, and that didn't fix it...

First of all, try scanning with Ad-aware and the VX2 plugin too:

In case you haven't scanned with Avast, you can do this too.

If the error is still there after the 2 scans, the only i can think of is this, but i have my doubts with it. I thought that if your Winsock files were corrupted you would have no Internet connection at all.

Anyway it makes back-ups so you could try it...

Thanks for the advice. I ran the VX2 plugin and it fixed things up.
