rebind your keys?
Go To your Config
(F:\Steam\SteamApps\_Account Name_\sin episodes emergence\SE1\cfg\config.cfg)

bind "a" "+moveleft"
bind "d" "+moveright"

Or just rebind them in your InGame Options Menu -> Keyboard

Lazy noob my ass. The miscellaneous movement keys like turn left/right don't function unless you disable mouse look. I guess the Ritual guys decided that since they don't use any movement keys along with the mouse that nobody else should. I bought this game because I knew it was based on the HL2 engine so the controls would work as expected.

Absolutely, if you have mouselook YOU DON'T NEED THE LEFT OR RIGHT KEY.

Half-Life 2 used the same functionality here as we do. Disabling mouselook will enable the turn left/turn right key bindings to function as you are expecting them to. You can turn off mouselook by pulling down your console (~ key, it must be enabled in the advanced keyboard options first), and typing in this:
cl_mouselook 0
Note that this must be set at the main menu, it cannot be changed once you're in a game. Does this fix your issue?

Actually, it doesn't; you can turn left/right while mouselook is enabled in Half-Life 2.
