Default HL2-Eposide 1 rqsted vodeo driver now locks Sin

When I started HL2 Eposide 1, it requested that I download the latest ATI Radeon Driver (I have the 800 series board). As soon as I did this, Sin Emergence has started locking, and when game locks, it locks up windows, and I have to reboot. Nothing works to free it up, ie, Alt TAB and or ctrl alt del. . Its loked up in the train yard, right after I get a radio communication from the Cindy character saying "YES, that's it!".
Also locked up once in the docks when I was running up the long incline.
Have not tried to reproduce either lockup.

hi - here are all the results - none of the problems seemed to refer to anything as severe as locking the game. Also, btw, the Hl2-episode 1 does not lock. Should I try any of the suggestions below like lowering the -dxlevel requirements or playing with nosound option?
Cheers
