When watching a DVD most of the time you have a choice between these two sound formats. Which do you choose and why?
Assuming of course that your amp can decode both sound encryption formats!

ya but both DTS and Dolby use 5.1 channel technology. My amp will even do 6.1 (rear center is the sixth) What I want to know is which is a better sounding decoder? I think the setting should be dependant on the rear speaker placement but i'm not sure? If your rears are more beside you than behind you use DTS. If rears are really behind you use Dolby. I'm not sure if this is correct but i think i remember reading it somewhere.
Oh and Rum if your only using 5 of your 5.1 go out and get a sub-woofer, it will make an incredable difference

DTS is just a set of standards, it will in no way affect your 5.1, so don't worry about it! [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

I may be talking out my arse, but isn't DTS lower frequency effects? Effects that will be only reproduced through DTS? My receiver, which is a mid range Sony, detects the various decodings possible from the DVD. If the DVD is not encoded in DTS for instance then there would be no reason to decode in that? Right?

I think we're missing the point here!
Both Dolby Digital and DTS can utilize 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1
My ? is is there an audible difference between the two?
DTS uses a higher bit encoding rate than DD but does this translate to better audio?

If the DVD isn't encoded in DTS you can only play it in DD format!

It is a one or the other selection, and no it is not just for LFE, it's the whole kit'n'kaboodle!

I think I hear/feel more from the rears in DTS than DD but I wanted input from ya'll!

I'd say that it all depends on the mix of each on the DVD. I would read the review for a DVD in question at a good website. Often they mention which mix is better, the DD or the DTS. In my experience, though, the DTS mixes tend to sound better, but I have heard some pretty bad ones.
