Default QotW: Favorite Characters

This week's question comes straight from our design staff, and is a bit of a difficult one (at least for me...)

Quote:
What's your favorite video game character (playable or non-playable), and why?
As for the promised QotW twist, it's coming...it's just going to take a few days longer than I expected.

My favorite video game character would have to be Sam Fisher just because I am a big fan of the splinter cell series.

Characters don't matter to me, unless they are really annoying, then I like to die just to see the character die.

BUT if I had to choose,
Diego from Metal Fatigue, but only becuase he had the best Corponation.

I'd have to go with Elexis Sinclaire because she looks so good in latex.

Seriously though, I'd have to go with Jim Raynor from Starcraft. He's part of the team and follows orders, but will do what's right if his orders are bullshit. He kicks ass and isn't afraid to stand his ground even though heavilly outnumbered. Just an all around hero type guy.

Definitely Bastila from Knights of the Old Republic.

Besides personal taste - characters with a lot of depth, with actual character, that portray a level of realism that draws you in are top notch and her character was perfect at the job. There was also a forced connection through story, and the extension/option of friendship/romance.

Iím also going to add that any character with depth is generally going to appeal to me. Itís not easy, and itís probably a lot of extra work on the development side but it adds a whole lot to the game to have characters that actually interact, give opinions, have their own personal stories, traits, etc.

Basically, if youíre going for realism, simulating a real person.

This isnít limited to RPGs either. Even if you donít necessarily have dialogue select options, or deep stories working between characters you can still pull it off.

Good voice acting, animations, and great work on the model/texture donít hurt either.

Coming in a close second is any character with a good personality that can lighten a game every now and then. Thereís usually always one in every great game. The weapons dealer in Blade Runner comes to mind, and Iím sure there are countless others that everyone could list off.

Coming in third are basically your standby characters that maybe arenít as deep but still have a good amount of depth to them, have distinctive personalities, etc. There are any number I could list in this catagory, but most of the character sidekicks in Baldur's Gate 1/2 definitely fit the bill.

If you can combine all 3 in one game then youíve got a good thing going.

Roger Wilco of Space Quest is one of my all time favs. He's a loser, he can't do anything right, except save the universe time after time. It's great and really refreshing to have a character like that who doesn't take himself so seriously.

On the complete flip side is Riddick from the Perfect Dark/ Escape from Butcher Bay universe. He's the ultimate bad ass in my opinion. Totally out for himself, never drawn or victim to his own inner demons, he's in total control of his own destiny. It's so satisfying to see how he mind ****s others makes them squirm in fear for the brutal pain he'll bring upon them.

Not my question, so I may as well participate.

My personal favs:

Talim (Soul Caliber II): Cute, perky, and the only character in the whole game to have a positive outlook.
Jade (Beyond Good & Evil): Strong, opinionated, looks out for others, tolerates being surrounded by idiots.
Raz (Psychonauts): Determination, chutzpa and a very wry sense of humor.
The Sarge (Halo, Halo 2): Sure, he's your stereotypical sergeant, but he does it just so well...
Red Warrior (Gauntlet II): No other reason than I love hearing, "Red Warrior Needs Food Badly," and "Red Warrior Is About To Die" in that warbly voice.

*Jumps on the sinking ship*

Erm, Kaileena from Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.
Why? Because all she wants to do is live.
