I'm at work right now so I can't remember everything, but the basics go something like this

E/D = forward/backward
S/F = primary/secondary fire
A = melee
3/4/5 = magnum/scatter/rifle
mouse 1/2 = strafe left/right
mouse 3 = use
mouse 4 = zoom
mouse 5 or G (depends on my mood) = grenade

this is pretty much the layout that I use for all FPS's

Wow... that's a very complex set-up. I like how you moved over the forward and backward keys, though I don't know about moving the strafing to the mouse. It feels awkward just thinking about it for me. Though I'm sure it has its rewards.

Yojimbo, your setup must be really hard to get used to. I can almost see the advantage of putting strafing on the mouse, but if you have a multi-button mouse you can be just as efficient with regular wasd. Is there a benefit to your setup or is it just a preference?

I've never been able to get the hang of WASD; my fingers keep slipping to the wrong keys. So arrow keys it is for me.

Jump: Mouse 2
Crouch: Control
Walk: Shift

Fire: Mouse 1/3
Reload: Page Down
Weapon Up/Down: Mouse Wheel
Melee: End
Zoom: Insert
Grenade: Delete

Use: Enter
Comms: \

I don't use individual weapon selects very often; I leave them bound to the default number keys. This setup--or something very similar--is what I use in most every FPS I play, barring those few older ones that aren't very configurable (Dark Forces, I'm looking at you!).

I think it started out because I'm a southpaw, so being able to control the weapon just felt more natural with the left. in order to do that it was either learn to use the mouse with the left hand, or switch up the normal WASD controls...so after some experimentation, that's what I came up with.

there is a certain drawback to it since with the standard controls, you can mouse look/aim/fire all with one hand, so you have a faster reaction time when it comes to shooting, but I also believe that there's a benefit to be able to look/strafe all with one hand, so I guess it's a trade-off

Yojimbo's setup looks like a typical console game (w/ game controller) setup (I'm thinking Halo 2 here...). The strafe not being attached to forward/back freaks the hell out of me but lots of people like it, and you go with what you are used to I guess.

For me,

Movement- WASD
Weapon switch - q
Use - e
Grenade - left left mouse
Primary Fire - left mouse
Melee - middle mouse
Zoom - right mouse
Alternate Fire - right right mouse
Crouch - left shift (unique to games with auto-run)
Jump - Space
Order Coffee - F7

That's pretty funny. Like I said before, I don't use the mousewheel. If you can remember which key brings out the right one, you don't have to fuddle with the rolling wheel.

First off, I do use the wheel to switch weapons. Mainly because HL made it so easy (it wouldn't switch the weapon until I selected the one I wanted).

and for me I have a very different layout from the standard.
Movement -> NS-L
crouch -> Shift
use -> enter
reload -> r
grenade -> c

Mouse1 -> primary
Mouse2 -> secondary
Mouse3 -> zoom
Mouse5 -> melee
Mouse7 -> grenade

Mouse sensitivity 10 (1600dpi)

Am I the only one that plays with such a low mouse sensitivity? (2.2 ingame with 400 dpi forced on the mouse itself)

You probably aren't the only one. I guess my 10 sensitivity is pretty high compared to normal players.
I have a question for you. Can you rotate 360 degrees without picking up the mouse? How about 180? Those are the main reasons for my high sensitivity.

All right then ROLL! ROLL through the gates of Hell!
Must you take the fun out of everything?

EDIT:
And yeah, I use the default control configuration, except for moving the grenade from g to f, since g is so far away from WASD

I can only just manage 180, so I can see now why people have it set at such levels. My problem is with higher sensitivities I over compensate for shots and end up missing people .

Yes, that is the main caveat of high sensitivity. My trick is to brace my hand against the desk so I can move the mouse in small increments whenever I need it. Helps to have a higher sample rate as well:

Windows XP
control panel -->
(in classic view) mouse --> hardware --> properties --> advanced settings --> sample rate --> 200
(in category view) printers and other hardware --> mouse --> hardware --> properties --> advanced settings --> sample rate --> 200
