![]() I just bought EF2 today and I have the same crashing problem as CRONEO posted on another post thread. When it gets ready to load it goes to a grey screen and flashes. Have a 1.6ghz PC with 512 ram and a Nvida GF2 card. Have got the new drivers for the card and have the DirectX9 and now trying 9a. Would really like to hear from anyone else who had this problem and got it working.

![]() Run DX-DIAG. Post your DX-DIAG .txt file here or link it. We will look it over. There are plenty of people out using your card and it works fine so i'm sure we can figure it out for you.

![]() Hi,
I had the same problem (see my other post) but for the moment I have it fixed. But I don´t know exactly how I did it. When you uninstall the game be sure to remove the folder afterwards. Then I just reinstalled and to my surprise it works now. However it already crashed once but without consequence seemingly. I saw you also have a Dell and are running Windows Me. these are our 2 common points. maybe it has something to do with this. it cannot be our graphics card since I have ATI and you NVidia. I already had dx9.0a and still I had the problem you describe so I doubt that installing 9.0a will fix it. anyway, good luck! |

![]() One other thing I just remember. Originally I didn´t install the game in the default folder. Now I did and it works. Maybe it is coincidence but maybe not.

![]() No success yet on that. I just finished up uninstalling and deleting the folder and reinstalling, but it didn't work. BTW, unlike some others I have heard... it doesn't get anywhere. Once the blue console thing loads it just goes to the flickering. I don't get any type of error screen. Or anything. but when I hit escape, it goes to a black screen and stops flickering. Still I can't do anything though.

![]() I installed it on the old E-Machine computer with 98 on it and a voodoo card and it worked. So it isn't the disc.

![]() A couple questions for you.
1.) Can you get into the shell (i.e. spinning Voyager) 2.) Have you changed your advanced video option at all in the game? 3.) Did you install the game to the default directory? 4.) What is your machine name? I'm not seeing this as a problem, but I wanted to see if you use any non-standard characters or symbols in your machine name. 5.) Are you running an old .cfg from another game with your preferred settings? 6.) Have you checked the Dell site to see if you have the latest machine Bios and also the latest version of the SoundMax driver for your built-in sound system? 7.) Have you tried uninstalling your video driver, rebooting, then reinstalling your video driver? Sometimes if you install drivers over older driver without uninstalling them they leave residual drivers and that gives you a mismatched driver set (which will crash). 8.) There are newer video drivers then what you have, but the ones you have should work fine. They work fine on the same card I was testing on here (same as you have). |

![]() It loads the blue console (q3 thingy) and after that it goes to the flickering screen. It doesn't load any star trek menus or paramount logo at all.
Have you changed your advanced video option at all in the game? Nope, can't get to it. Did you install the game to the default directory yes What is your machine name? I'm not seeing this as a problem, but I wanted to see if you use any non-standard characters or symbols in your machine name. dimension 43000 Are you running an old .cfg from another game with your preferred settings? Nope, haven't changed any settings or cfgs. Have you checked the Dell site to see if you have the latest machine Bios and also the latest version of the SoundMax driver for your built-in sound system? Nope, but demo worked on it fine. I have installed the new drives. Haven't uninstalled them yet and reinstalled them yet though. |

![]() Hi,
This is getting weird. Originally I had exactly the same problem as DIJOANNE but then I uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked. I could load the game and play it (looks great!). But now I again cannot load it anymore and even reinstalling it doesn´t help. It blocks at a flickering grey screen before the intro movies. The weird thing is that between the period that it worked and now is that I played some soldier of fortune 2 and this game also crashed once. that´s the only important thing which happened. A question for PingEnvy: During install I always get the question if I want to install directx 9.0 but I have 9.0a installed. Isn´t this automatically detected or could it be that directx is not installed well? I did the tests in dxdiag and they are fine. I tried cats 3.4 and 3.5. no change. I have P4 1.7 GHz, 384 MB RDRAM, Radeon 9800pro and windowsMe helphelphelp |

![]() The game comes with DX9.0 rather then 9.0a as it came out at the very end of the games testing (in a distribution form). You shouldn't need to reinstall DirectX as long as you have either 9.0 or 9.0a it should work fine.
A couple recommendations. During your re-install did you disable you virus checker? Prior to installation did you run scandisk and defrag your hard drive? I always recommend that for installing a game. It puts the assets for the game all together (faster loads) when you play the game. It also insures that there are no drive surface errors or crosslinked files from the installation which could cause problems. Beyond that having the latest video, sound, bios, and chipset drivers is always a good thing. Along with the latest DX. |

![]() DIJOANNE,
I might have found a solution. I don´t know if you are still having the problem or not but till today the game didn´t start most of the time and exceptionally it did but I never understood why. This I still don´t understand but I have found a way so that it starts every time (at least the ten times or so that I tried it already). I don´t know if it is a permanent solution or not but I´m reasonably confident. The cause of our problems are the intro movies. There are 4 movies in total: paramount, activision, ritual and the game intro. I had the suspicion these were the cause for some time but I didn´t know how to bypass them. Now I can do it. Probably there is an easier way (like adding a command to the shorcut for the game) but this will do. Here is the procedure: 1) in the base directory of the game you will find some *.pk3 files. you have to open the one called "pak0.pk3". I use Winrar, I don´t know if it is also possible with the more common WinZip. 2) once opened you will see a subdirectory "global". Open that one and find the file "game.cfg". extract it to a directory of your choice. 3) open the file with wordpad and you will see the following line: setd introCommand "defaultSoundTrack none; cinematic paramount.roq; cinematic activision.roq; cinematic ritual.roq; cinematic intro.roq; afterCinematic defaultSoundTrack music/intro; afterCinematic pushmenu main \n" modify it to: setd introCommand "defaultSoundTrack none; afterCinematic defaultSoundTrack music/intro; afterCinematic pushmenu main \n" in this way you bypass the intro movies. save the file. 4) now you have to get this file back into the .pk3 file. Open the pak0.pk3 file and go again to the "global" directory. now you can add the modified game.cfg file and overwrite the old one. 5) start the game et voila. hopefully it works. it does for me (till now) but iům still some anxious everytime it starts. I will send this message also by mail to PingEnvy and hopefully they can find the real reason and put it in a patch. greets, Plip |

![]() I dont know if this is a problem but when I edited that game.cfg certain servers rejected me saying unpure pk3. Seeing as I didnt take a back up (doh) meant I had to uninstall then reinstall. Maybe somebody from the game will advise us on this.

![]() that´s good to know but for the moment I have no choice. With the ´pure´ pk3 the game is not running so I have to modify it. For the moment I´m already more than happy to have the single player up and running. hopefull there will be a patch that addresses this issue and then I can go back to the pure files.

![]() you should be able to add...
+introCommand "defaultSoundTrack none; afterCinematic defaultSoundTrack music/intro; afterCinematic pushmenu main \n" to the end of your ef2 cmd line (windows shortcut) also in other q3 games, the .pk3`s seem to be loaded in alpha-numerical order, and we can override default files in the official .pk3`s by adding new .pk3`s of our own so they load up after the official ones. I haven`t tried this in ef2 but in theory, if you extracted from the official .pk3 any files you want to alter, like the global .cfg ...edited them and zipped them into a new .zip using the same paths the official pk3 used (winzip work fines if we rename the new .zip to .pk3 afterwards) and call the new .pk3 something like pak99.pk3 this should then work, unless ritual have ef2 loading in the .pk3`s different from other q3 games. also I`m not sure if you`d get mp servers saying your game is unpure after this, but it would be easier in that case to move the new .pk3`s into a temp folder while you played online, and then moved them into the ef2 base folder to play sp... again this is just theory, so sorry if it doesn`t help anyone. |

![]() By the way, your first idea of adding the command to the shortcut works. So now I´m using the original pk3 file and everything is working. thanks a lot! I also thought of doing it that way but I didn´t know how to do it. much easier this way.
Some people were also having the same problem on the eliteforce.com forum. I copied your words there mentioning of course your name. Seemingly it is a problem common to Dell. sounds a bit weird but that´s the common stuff. |
