Default A smart thing Id should do after Doom III

Drop the licensing fee to $100 for amature developers to use. To keep big companies away from using it, make it so that if they sell it instead of offering it online for free or part of your own portfolio, to get 1/2 the total sales in royalties, thats $25.00 for every $50.00 game sold incase you are too lazy or you forgot because you sit on your computer an play games all day.

They will never do it because :

1) Fast it will be warezed all over the place
2) Not enough $ coming back.
3) A hit in the feet of seeling the other engine. (Q2-Q3)
4) Photoshop is sold 500..

Id isn't all about money, but also about prestige.

In contrast to companies who do nothing but create technology, our goal is to have a small number of exceptionally high quality QUAKE III Arena engine licensees.

If Joe Schmoe was able to get the enging cheap, there'd a lot of low quality games flooding the market. Eventually that would get back to id and hurt their reputation. That policy is not going to change when the Doom III engine becomes available for licensing. Otherwise id might as well change their name to Epic.

Not exactly since the same could be said for Quake 2 which was released under the GPL, and under the GPL you must still give credit to Id software. How old the game is doesn't matter. I doubt companies would still lease Quake III after Doom III comes out, and this would be a way to get a little more $ out of QIII
