Dead Link!

If you didn't understood what I mean, it's illegal to convert CTF Voy1 or any other EF1 maps to Q3.

Illegal to convert them, or use the exact same textures to build a copy, BUT is it illegal to use Q3 textures (or custom textures) to build a voy map for Q3? Some say yes, some say no. So, if I open EFR and use EF1 and custom textures to build an almost exact copy of EF2's Starfleet Academy, could Ritual sue me? It's questionable.

If you build a copy from scratch using only Q3 stuff, no problem.

But as soon as a brush have been used from the source .map from EF, or any texture from EF, BANG!

See, that's the confusing part. You say that if you build a copy from scratch, there's no problem. I recall a lot of folks telling me different when I started work on Crucible, which is a remake of the secret level "Bright Crucible" from Hexen. It was all done with EF & custom textures, but ppl still told me I was risking getting sued by recreating that map without Raven's written permission.

Anyway, my point is that there's so much contradiction and misinformation on the subject of IP and Copyright that nobody ever really knows WHAT they can and can't do. So, I'll just map what I wanna map and if a company wants me to stop distributing a particular map, all they gotta do is ask.

Well, even if you recreate a map from scratch, using all new textures and all new brushes, it's still technically illegal. The IP belongs to the creator, and he can legally order you to cease and desist.

But most people/companies won't care about that (some even encourage it) - as long as you're not doing a straight port - by decompiling a map or using the original textures - and give credit where credit is due.

In addition - all transfer of content between different games are forbidden in all EULA's I know of, unless you manage to get written concent from the author/publisher. It's more common for a author/publisher to actually get involved and stop this kind of violation of agreements - I've seen it happen a couple of times.

Anyway, legality set apart, those ctf_voy maps are really good ports. I would even say that I prefer playing them through Q3 than throught EF: better lighting contrast and faster/smoother gameplay.

The IP includes map geometry, so a port would be difficult without the consent of the original creator.

As a mapper I know it is illegal. I had to retexture my whole map before releasing it because I didn't know at that time...

Still there are 'illegal' files on the net :/

RTCW - Q3DM17

Voy1 on Q3:

Q3Tourney3 on EF:

I know that some files have been deleted from effiles.com because of this issue.
Rule of thumb: NEVER use textures from one game or .map files as a base for your map in another game.

Oh, and 'port' is to big a word for the conversion, voy1 and voy2 are shipped in .map format with the GTK, and importing them in the Q3editor is easy as pie...

[link]

here are both in a single pk3 file

Edit: Removed the link, as the maps offered on the site are violating copyright.

Thx guys
I knew I had seen somewhere and could count on you to help me. Surely though the copyright laws are only really applicable when some one copies work for personal gain.

Nah, they're applicable at any time, but it's just that software companies usually have better sense than to sue us poor mappers cuz they know their legal costs will outwiegh whatever they might hope to get.
