Default Very strange sound problem

I have experienced a very strange sound problem. When I start the game, the sound plays fine for the ritual ad at the beginning, but when I actually play the game, no sound can be heard. The strange thing is, if I turn my speakers up to max volume I can very faintly hear dialogue being spoken. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers, and there is nothing wrong with them as they work fine for music and all other games. I'm quite confused, can anyone help?

This might sound redundant, but make sure in the windows control panel you have 5.1 speakers selected, and that in the game you have 5.1 selected. This is a no brainer, but I just bring it up in case. However, the real problem is probably due to sound drivers. What's your sound card?

Also, check in the console to see what the volume setting is at. Type "volume" in the console, without the quotes. 1 is the default setting.

I dont think it has anything to do with the drivers, because as I stated before, sound is coming out of the speakers, it is just very very quiet and can only be heard very lightly at full volume. I'm quite stumped, any tips would help.

Did you check to see what the in-game volume was set at?

Your drivers are several versions old. Can you see if the driver posted here fixes your issue?

Hmmm..well i kind of have the same problem. When i played the game for the first time everthing went perfect. But now it only plays sound at the intro (nvidia & ritual thing) and then i dont hear anything.
checked for updates, but the update isnt something that fixes this problem.

well, the problem is solved , but i dont know what the reason is.
the only thing i did was take my soundcard out and back in, without uninstalling it, and my sound is back. so it wasnt any driver problem

i just hope i dont have to do this everytime i wanna play the game.

Ok, here i am (again) with the same problem.
i wanted to play the game for the 3rd time and there was NO sound again, so i decided to give the SB-live 5.1 hotfix a try. And my sound was back again. But now i try to play the game (4th time), the sound is gone again!!!
Does anyone know how to fix this problem????
This is kind of workin on my nerves , having to un-install, install my soundcard everytime i want to play the game.
(also
I installed and played HL2: first episode. And it didnt tell me to update my soundcard. and i played it without any problem.)
