Default Enabling Joystick causes view to just look to sky

When enabling the Joystick (Logitech Attack 3) the view looks to the sky and will not allow normal freedom of movement for the view. The joystick works in HL2 and other games just fine. If you disable the joystick the mouse works just fine with normal game play.

Try pulling down the console and typing "exec joy" after you have enabled the joystick. Then quit and restart the game.

Ok, I tried that. Enabled the Developer Console and used ~ (tilde) to get to it. Typed "exec joy" and hit Submit button. Restarted game and made sure the joystick buttons were bound to their respective functions (joy1 - primary, AUX6/AUX 7 forward and backward, JOY4/AUX5 strafe left/right, etc....). Created new game.
Same issue. I have "enable joystick" and "use joystick to look around" turned on. Moving the stick left and right make the screen go left and right. And the Z axis rotates the sky in circles either counter or clockwise depending on either up/down direction. The view is still looking straight up. Disabling joystick allows for proper function with the mouse. Seems like the game is not recognizing the "look around" function for the joystick.

Oh, and if it matters. This is downloaded from STEAM as a preload purchase, but I don't think this is STEAM issue.

Try deleting the game and re-download it through Steam . . .

No need for that time-consuming process. Steam already have a function for making sure the game cache is all good. Just right click SiN:Emergence in your game list, choose properties, and under the Local files tab press "Verify integrity of game cache". It will give the same effect as a re-download, but without the long waiting

Doesn't always work. It can report that the files are correct, while they are not and therefor causes problems . . .

Ok, removed local content from STEAM for Emergence and installed again. Still the same issue. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe have the same issue? Does the joystick work for anyone else?

We tested the joystick stuff here and didn't have that behavior. Have you calibrated the joystick in windows to make sure it's working properly?

What config did you use? I have seen here and at the ClanA3D forum that the support for joysticks is not working and that was with the Panther XL, a CH and a Saitek

Hi,

Yes, calibration in windows is fine. And this Joystick works in HL2 without problems. I use basically the same button config for HL2 as what I set for Sin Emergence. Yes I seen others with the spinning issue. If I set my Z axis to the middle the spinning stops, but I'm still looking at the sky. While looking at the sky, you can move forward/backward etc... It seems the only piece that doesn't work is the "Use Joystick to look around" function.

Try adjusting the various axes on the joystick and see if any of them cause your view to move. If we can find out why the joystick is behaving this way, we can hopefully have it fixed in a future patch.

Ok,

I adjusted "joy_pitchsensitivity 0".
I adjusted "joy_yawsensitivity 0".
Then "centerview". This brought it down to forward looking,
However the joystick "x and y" axis simply just move the "side to side" and "forward and backward"

So, I adjusted "joy_sidesensitivity 0" and "joy_forwardsensitivity 0"
This keeps me stationary looking forward, but I still can not look around with the joystick. I'm thinking that the pitch and yaw definately have a lot to do with this or something else. I think I'll try pitch and yaw at something similiar to the "m_yaw" and "m_pitch".

The way I typically play is that "AUX6 and AUX7" are Foward/Backward and "JOY4 and AUX5" are Left/Right Strafe. Other buttons on the joystick jump, duck, weapons etc... Just need the x/y axis of the joystick to look around.

Ok,

I set the pitch and yaw to -0.022 and 0.022 and left everything else as I described above. Now with the pitch at a negative number the view slowly moves down till I'm looking at the floor.
Changing the yaw didn't have an effect for looking side to side.
I tested some other values between 1 and -1. Seems that if it is positive it looks up and if negative it looks down. Seems to me like this is some delta or offset value to apply to pitch and yaw inputs if they are set to 0, to allow the joystick to control the action. It's like there is supposed to be a toggle that changes the behavior of the x/y axis, from movement vs. looking around and that toggle isn't getting changed.

Try enabling/disabling the "joystick look" option in the menu and see if it behaves any differently.

Ok,

I did try that. No luck. Is there something in the developer console that also toggles this feature?? I tried scrolling through all the "j" commands but am not finding anything that looks reasonable. I tried different values for joy_advanced and joy_advaxis# etc... No luck, just shooting the the dark.

I'm not sure...I just talked with the developer that handled the joystick stuff here and he confirmed that we've never seen this described behavior. He also didn't know of any other ways to change the joystick look other than the ones I've outlined already. I'm not sure what else to tell you here. Try looking through some of the articles on http://support.steampowered.com

Ok,

I did find a "configuring joystick" doc that explains most of the developer console options for HL. Going to try and mess around with those and see if they apply so SIN. Will post back if I get anywhere.

I looked at the HL2 "config.cfg" file and found that turning on/off the "use joystick to look around" adds/removes a "+jlook" value
at the end of the file. In SiN Episodes toggling this value also add a +jlook as well. I tried using some of the joy_advaxisx and joyadvaxisy functions to enable looking around per the steam doc by editing the config.cfg and adding the extra config options to the mix and making sure the pitch/forward/yaw etc... values were the same as HL2. Anyways... looks like SIN is not recognizing the "+jlook" or any of the advanced functions. Going to try again with removing the game from STEAM then totally removing the game directory from my hard drive and re-installing. If this truely is supposed to work then maybe my image is corrupted again....

Ok,... redownloaded the game off Steam... same behaviour. Guess I just have to play without a joystick.... unless you guys fix the code.... will be looking for patch. You may need a better test bed of joysticks or something... I can't be the only one.

You are not the only one. As far as I can tell no one can get a joystick to work right. The strange thing is that Half Life 2 works great with a joystick.

We're sorry about the trouble with joysticks. The issue has been reported and hopefully will be fixed in the next patch.
