![]() I don't get the BS that the Millennium starts at 2,001. (makes me think of a movie)
Okay, somewhere it'll have to start at zero, right? And when did AD start? At zero. And zero was the beginning, correct? You go 1,000 years later and it's 1,000 AD. You go another 1,000 years later and it'll be 2,000 AD. And 2,000 AD will be the start, right? So why is it that people are saying that the Millennium starts at 2,001 AD? ![]() The very first year was year 1. They didn't start counting dates as 1-1-00. The first day of the first year was 1-1-01. By that theory, we will soon be completing year #1,999, and just starting the 2,000th year.
I guess if you really get down to it, all anyone is celebrating is the fact that the calender was created ~2000 years ago. Since man has been around far longer, what's the point of the millenium? ------------------ Wingznut[PEZ] www.enjoy-pez.com ICQ #29598363 |

![]() People are celebrating the change of the number from 19xx to 2000, everyone knows the next millenium technically starts on 2001, but who cares, its all fun and parties! One thing that makes it so cool is the anxious feeling of Y2K problems...

![]() I keep hearing people talk about this "Y2K" stuff. Does anyone know what "Y2K" stands for? Is it an acronym or something?

![]() I doubt your post is a serious one Thrak, but just in case here is an explaination.
Y2K = year 2000 Y = Year (obviously) 2K = 2000 in Compuspeak, K=roughly 1000 (1024 actually) So in other words it's a media catch phrase! Y2K should actually mean year 2048! |

![]() The coming millenium and the year 2000 are meaningless in themselves. Hell, if we had been created with 8 fingers instead of 10, we would be celebrating the fourth millenium in 48 years. It's just numbers on an arbitrary calender system on an arbitrary mathematic system--nothing else.
And to answer the question why we started with 01 instead of 00 is because Christianity became the official religion of Rome and they began counting relative to the year of Christ's death sometime later. The people in "year 1" didn't even know they were in "year 1" so-to-speak. That happenned sometime later. Hell, there is more than 1 calender on this planet and it's not even the second millenium on those, either. So we're not going to die in 3 days nor will we be flying our cars to work. ![]() |

![]() Yeah, a kilobyte is 1024, but there were kilograms, kilohertz, kilometers, and other forms of measurements long before they byte and they are all based on 1000s.

![]() Contrary to popular belief A.D. does not mean "After Death" but rather "Ano Domino" which is latin for something I can't remember!
On the other hand let's assume that B.C. refers to "Before Christ" and A.D. refers to "After Death." Then there is approximatly 32 years of missing time, those being the years that he was alive! |

![]() ...which is the year he was crucified. BC means before that, not before he was born.
NOTE: I am not a Jesus freak. I wanted to establish that, ha. I just like clarifying things... |

![]() Heheheh
![]() Just to clarify Lanik... B.C. refers, to "Anti Domino" or "Before Christ" and A.D. refers to "Ano Domeno" or "Year of our Lord". We say B.C. which is the english shortening and translation of "Anti Domino" so as not to confuse the two abreviations as they are both "AD"! Nice try though with BC meaning B4 Crucifixion I too am not a religion freak, far from it in fact! I concider myself an athiest till my death bed...then I might find god! ![]() I didn't say BC meant Before Crucifixion literally, Strabo. It is the same timeframe but it doesn't mean it literally.
For example: Sunday doesn't literally mean "After Saturday and Before Monday" but it is. [This message has been edited by Lanik (edited 12-28-1999).] |

![]() You guys say you're not Jesus freaks. I am sure you are not Jesus. However, you guys are definitely freaks.
![]() I can never remember the translations for AD and BC. The only thing I know for sure is that PM stands for pre-midnight, and AM stands for after midnight. ------------------ Thrakkorzog "It's 'Thrakkorzog'! With a 'K'!" |
