Default U4 effect lag

From the first contact with these U4 barrels on I knew, the toxication effect is lagging my game out extremely as the FPS go under 5. Now that the arena mode was released, I had the same effect without the extreme FPS loss. Can anyone tell me how to make the effect in normal singleplayer as it is in the arena mode to make the game more enjoyable on my relative old system (P4 2500/Radeon 9800)?

The effect in single player and the effect in arena mode are identical (i.e. we do not have a seperate effect that is called.)

We do have a lower-impact version of the effect for DirectX 7 mode, but it has the unfortunate side effect of reducing the texture resolution for the rest of the game so you can't read half of the signs.

I know it sounds harsh, but things like this are to be expected when you play modern games on older systems. I have a $400 6800GT video card that I got just a couple years ago. When playing Oblivion, my framerates dip under 15 FPS at certain times. It stinks, but that's just the way things go.

Now I'm selling my current PC to help fund yet another upgrade.

Sure, but I'm playing the game in 1920x1200 with an acceptable framerate (some lags, but mostly over 30 FPS) and nearly maximum quality. So the only problem is the U4 effect in the story mode which surely related to the view overlay material and it would be nice to know how to deactivate this.

Eventually there is a simple solution. Thank you.

It'd be nice if you could turn the effect off or simplify it as you could with the smoke grenade effect in Counterstrike. Just having checkbox in the options would do. I hadn't paid much attention to the gas effect myself, since it slows everything down anyway. I'll try running through it with FRAPS on sometime.
