Default Changing the crosshairs appearance

Is there any way to change the appearace of the crosshair? Specifically, to make it darker or stand out more, or maybe change the color. There are times I have trouble seeing the thing as it is ingame.

I have/had same issues in HL1, HL2, it does get lost in the background at times. This is also in the suggestions/comments thread.

The commands aren't even in the command list, and when entered I get an error message actually, unknown command.
