Default Black fence

A lot of my stuff is all black when I play the map. It happens with fence texture and wood. Is this just because I haven't added light to my map yet, or am I doing something wrong when I select the textures?

The textures your using are for models and not regular brush geometry. Model textures use vertex lighting and Brush's use lightmaps. Make sure you dont use textures that have models in the name.

(Valve and Ritual should really make it so you cant use model textures in the Hammer texture browser...)

Oh thanks. How can I make a chainlink fence or metal grate walkway? Do I have to create e fence prefab? Or is there already an entity that I can use?

Use a prop_static to use one of the fence models. IIRC most of the useful fence bits are in the docks folder.
