Angry PC restart at exact moment game begins

Similar to another recent post, but not quite the same. The game installs and opens fine. But when I go new game the loading bar graph appears, goes full and at the exact moment the game is supposed to start - my machine restarts.

All signs point to a hardware fault and it is NOT overheating. My computer is far above minimum spec and ALL my drivers are up to date, right down to chipset and AGP. My sound card is an onboard Analogue Devices chip so it's a bit crap, but even when I set the quality to Low in the game menu, I still have the problem.

Oddly when I visit the Steam support site, it said that all games on Steam other than HL2 and HL2-Lost Coast do NOT support 64-bit CPU's, which seems a bit absurd considering all half-modern chips are just that. And also it runs fine on my laptop which is an AMD Athlon Mobile 64.

I am running dual-monitors and also dual-processor dual-core Xeons, I don't know if Sin supports that. But HL2 runs fine on my machine and it's the same engine.

Thanks for any help, because it's stumped me!

Try Verifying Your Cache, once you have try the following options.

If you go here:

http://support.asus.com/download/dow...s&model=PCH-DL

and select Audio, WinXP and then download the driver, and update your sound. You seem to be behind a whole version.

Google, Motherboard Monitor 5 and run it, you may be overheating.

I verified the cache, but no difference.

And I don't know if it's an error on the Asus website but although the page the says version 6.2ish, the downloaded file version is 5.2, so I'm not even sure if v6.2 exists.

And MBM5 is great, but didn't report anything over 45C so nominal temps all round. I haven't overclocked anything on my machine either, and on my graphics card (Asus N6800) I even replaced the OEM fan with a much larger one.

Is there anyone one this forum who is running SiN fine on Dual-Core Dual-Processors? Because I've just got this feeling it could be to do with that.

You can try disabling one core and or processors and then running the game. I do believe it is possible from the task manager. Or you might need a third party application.

You could also try rolling back to older drivers, I'm using 91.31 with a BFG Geforce 6800 GT OC.

Do you know of any programs that can do that?

I searched on Google for a while and couldn't come with anything. There appears to be a large amount of data concerning AMD X2 processors and their effect on games but nothing regarding Xeons (presumably because they're server processors).

I cannot switch off 1 CPU from my BIOS, I tried disabling HyperThreading but it made no difference.

Run Sin Episodes, open Task Manager and select your application (SinEpisode.exe) on the Processes tab. Right click the program name and choose Set Affinity. Uncheck the processors which should not run this application.

That's one way of doing it without any extra programs.

Disable the automatic restart to get information about what goes wrong on your machine.

Thank you both of you, saves me a job.

Follow both their advices, I'll get some clarification of any test cases for SiN and/or HL2 running on a Xeon Chip.

Well I followed all your advice, disabling the second CPU didn't do anything so I figured it wasn't SIN having a problem with that. When I disabled Automatic Restart the BSoD showed me that it was a nVidia dll screwing up. So I searched for problems relating to that dll and people had solved it by changing their graphic aperture, but that didn't work for me.

So desparate, I uninstalled all the drivers (which I had done before), the device itself from the OS and then physically removed it from my machine. Restarted to settle everything, put the card back in and reinstalled the drivers. It worked straight away.

With stuff like this no wonder consoles are popular! Thanks for all your help.
