I've been thinking for several days about how to write this post. This site has been a substantial part of my life for over 7 years and as I look back on that, it's hard for me to sum up that time in a simple blob of text. But, for the sake of everybody's sanity, and to go easy on those prone to seizures, I've decided to forego the animated gifs I had planned and do the written word thing instead. And doing it this very moment allows me to steal Stylsy's thunder one last time. Huzzah!

First, let's get it right out of the way: Yes, I'm leaving Ritualistic, as well as Ritual Entertainment. Now, if you're hoping to bust out some popcorn in anticipation of a juicy story buried in a giant pile of dirty laundry, I'm sorry to disappoint. But let me try and explain the how's and why's anyway.

Ritual went through some pretty substantial transformations in recent months, stepping away from the kind of material that intially drew me to the company. I have no doubt that the games we'll see coming out of Ritual in the future will be twisted and put a few new spins on established conventions, but I had a hard time settling into this new world order.

A couple of weeks ago, another studio contacted me and asked if I was interested to shake multiplayer things asymmetrically, and as I reflected on that opportunity and the possibilities it was going to offer me, both personally and professionally, it was just too good a fit to pass up.

So, long story short, it's not you, it's me. Or something.

As for Ritualistic, this site is coming up on its 10 year anniversary and it makes me incredibly proud to see it reach that milestone. Other fansites have come and gone, but this one's stuck around. Sure, it's had its up and downs, as did Ritual, but overall I look back on those seven years with satisfaction and enjoyment. Ritual made some cool games during my time here and the community has always been great. We've had some colorful personalities stop by the boards and I met a lot of cool people and great new friends, including the Englishman below who really doesn't know wtf when it comes to livestock.

We've also had a lot of very dedicated staff members over the years who really helped turn this place into what it is. These guys don't get anywhere near enough credit, so I want to extend a huge "Thank You" to everybody who has invested their spare time into this site. I'm passing the torch on to two of them today - LeftE and Scarcrux - and they will continue to cover all things Ritual Entertainment and abuse people in the forums by giving them ridiculous titles and randomly deleting posts.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank the guys at Ritual. People like to throw "they're an incredible bunch of people" around while not really meaning it, but these guys really are incredible. Ritual was a fantastic and fun place to work at and I have nothing but fond memories. And though it's not always evident, they do read the boards very regularly to see what's going on in the community and what you guys are up to. So behave, you're being watched!@#

Anyhow, time to wrap this puppy up. Gentlemen, it's been an honor. I'll see you around.

One thousand and forty days ago, whilst lost in a field among some excitable looking sheep, I blackmailed badman into getting a role on this site and in return I would never reveal what he was really up to that day. Since then, I've had the good fortune to interact with the developers, community gamers and spam bots whilst covering Star Trek: Elite Force II, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and SiN Episodes, three games I thoroughly enjoyed.

However, all good things must come to an end and as Ritual transitions into a new era with a new direction it is time for me to complete my time here at Ritualistic, but before I do I wish give the obligatory thanks to the visitors and forumers who have made it a cool place to stay for the last three years. Also, thanks go to badman, my boss and gaming nemesis I've built a great friendship with - despite still not understanding the whole sheep thing.

Keep campaigning for boobs in games, the world is better with them than without them!

A heartfelt 'Happy Birthday!' goes out to our very own Andrew "Stylsy" Styles, who turns the big 2-0 today. It's all downhill from here, friend! sorry

And now let's all pile into a cake and jump out at a really inappropriate moment.

Looks like all our limbs survived last night more or less intact, so let's move on to some blatant self-promotion and horn-tooting, shall we? Because for once, I've actually made a note in Outlook so that this wouldn't get lost among hangovers and the usual slew of "I did what last night?!"-ers. Anywho, this little site was founded an amazing nine years ago on this very day and has since evolved from being a biased mouthpiece into being an official, biased mouthpiece, which is a feat we're all proud of. I wish I could say we had a slew of new and awesome things in store for this year, but we decided to be our usual, lazy selves and save all that for the big 1-0. Sorry.

Since the internet is all-encompassing, we thought we'd post our New Year's wishes at an inappropriate time like this one, where there isn't a New Year's celebration in at least 95% of the world. 2007 promises to bring some interesting changes and we hope that all of you will have a fantastic and productive year. Also, I'm sure at least one of you is out there getting hammered tonight in anticipation of waking up next to somebody you've never seen before in your life or Levelord, so be safe and don't fall face-first on any broken beer bottles. That gets so messy.

If you don't drink alcohol to excess you're a loser. 'nuff said.

Because I have a fetish for doing forum upgrades and the last one was so insanely entertaining, our forums are now running vBulletin 3.6.3. Allegedly there are about 50 bug fixes in this new version, along with a fix for a critical security flaw, but I haven't yet been able to find a definite changelog. In any case, if there's anything that's not broken, feel free to blame Stylsy before leaving a note in the comments.

The forums have been upgraded to the very latest version of vBulletin, 3.6.2. This release contains mostly fixes for glitches and bugs, so there aren't any new features for you guys to play around with. Nevertheless, if you do come across anything that seems broken, please let us know in the comments.

Man, that Stylsy person is really into the Elite Force II stuff. You'd think he was some kind of fanboy or something. Anyway, on with the real news. Those of you in the business of stalking celebrities will know that today is LeftE's birthday, and rumor has it that he's now even older than before, as shocking as that may seem considering he crossed the big, red 3-0 line two years ago already. In any event, happy birthday, Leffe! Don't forget to keep your walker close by, you never know when those legs are going to give out.

Michael Russell's latest Question of the Week asks which game mechanics you feel should be banished from this time forward in computer games.

Update: The upgrade is complete and the boards are back up. Most of the fixes and additions in this new version are behind the scenes, although both the 'Search This Thread' and the Calendar have received improvements.

Original post: We are in the process of upgrading the forums to the latest version, during which time they will not be accessible. Unlike the last upgrade, this one shouldn't take too long, so you'll have them back shortly.

Today's forum downtime is finally at an end - they're now running on the same box as the rest of the site, rather than Speakeasy's database. Things should hopefully be a bit faster around these parts now.

We also took the opportunity to upgrade the boards to vbulletin 3.6, which brings a host of additions and improvements to the table. If you want to read a bit more about some of those, check out this thread over at the vbulletin website going over the major features of this new release. There's quite a bit of stuff in there, although if you just want to post messages, things obviously won't be any different for you.

And as with any other upgrade we've done over the past couple years, if anything doesn't look or work right, leave a note in the comments and we'll get to it. Anyhow, enough blabber, go check out the boards.

If you're reading this, then you have reached Ritualistic's new home here at IX Web Hosting. After being hosted by the generous folks at Speakeasy for several years, we decided it was time to move on to a place where we could have more control over the server and the site. For you, things will probably largely remain the same for now, although we are considering a new number of cool features, including the return of hosted sites.

One change is that the site can now be reached via a static IP: http://71.18.170.187 - this should be handy in case of DNS issues, so if you're a regular visitor, it might not be a bad idea to bookmark that just in case.

In any event, although we did our best to ensure that the site didn't blow up completely during the transition, technology works in wonderous ways, so if you do come across anything that's broken, please let us know in the comments.

On a related note, news@ has finally been retired (at least for the time being), so it's no longer possible to contact us through that. From now on, please use this contact form, but keep in mind that we can't answer support requests. Please use the forums for those.
